Icelandic Sheep Market Place
N-ewes Update 24 March 2010I have been very busy since last autumn crocheting shawls made from my flock's wool. Each shawl is as ewenique as the sheep. I have also crocheted some non-wool (mainly strips of material or ribbon) shawls. And now that I've finished several crochet commissions I've had the time to update my Products page, so please do have a look to see what I have been doing!
I am currently crocheting a shawl in a fine 2 ply pure silk yarn spun by "The Unreweleez" to give me an idea of how silk yarn reacts, then I will try blending raw silk with Icelandic fleece.
Some of my sheep are finally showing signs of giving up their winter coats, so I will soon be plucking (rooing) that off them!
The Wool
I maintain a balance of earth colours within the flock of icelandic sheep, with few white sheep, as I prefer to spin and crochet natural colours, rather than dye the wool. However I can never be certain what colour lambs nature will produce from any particular mating! It makes lambing time very exciting.
Icelandic sheep have an unusual double-coated fleece that I love to turn into lopi wool.
Living the Dream
There is nothing nicer than watching my icelandic sheep of many colours browsing in the fields against a backdrop of Welsh hills and valleys. Seeing their coats glint and glow in the sunlight is sheer magic.
I started breeding Icelandic Sheep in April 1986. My Flock lives 1000 ft up in the hilly uplands of North Wales.
